Hailing from varying backgrounds and 3 different continents, the female music trio "Mooncake" consists of Swedish-based saxophonist/flutist Biggi Vinkeloe, flutist/vocalist Emily Hay from Southern California and Japanese born pianist/sound artist Motoko Honda who now lives in Oakland. Hay and Honda have collaborated as a duo together since 2009 and the Mooncake trio developed when they invited Vinkeloe to join them for some concerts in San Francisco several years ago which led to new friendships and genre busting and unique musical explorations.

Pianist, composer, and improviser, Motoko Honda is a musical force of nature, who blends jazz with chamber music, electronic music, and the sounds of music from around the globe. Long a vital part of the L.A. improvised music community as a collaborator with Wadada Leo Smith, Jeff Gauthier, Mike Watt, Elliott Sharp, and others, the Bay Area-based "keyboard alchemist" (Los Angeles Times) returns to lead a quartet featuring some of Northern California’s most inventive, versatile sidemen through intricate compositions that layer taut rhythms and lush melodies.

No(!)sy Room #1: Curiosity Garden of Sound and Light, conceived and directed by pianist/composer Motoko Honda is a performance series of an immersive experience of sound and light, utilizing the unique architectural features of the space hosting the installation, a multi directional surround sound system provided by Meyer Sound and light/video projections.
To help realize her vision for this special performance series, Honda has teamed up with with long time collaborator Jesse Gilbert from L.A., and new collaborators, Ian Winters and Norman Teale from Bay Area. The experimental and open nature of this series allows collaborators to explore different ideas, developing unique identities and concepts on each performance during Honda’s residency at Kala.
