Motoko Honda’s Sound Escape Project - Escape Velocity is a collaborative multimedia performance combining electro-acoustic music with live video projection featuring Spectral GL* developed by Jesse Gilbert. Spectral GL is an interactive listening instrument that generates realtime visual landscapes in response to the music, and it reveals the deep structure of sound in a visual language that is both intuitively and aesthetically linked to our emotional experience of music. Motoko Honda’s kaleidoscopic sound scape is generated through a combination of acoustic piano, synthesizers and electronic devices. She is joined by Joe Berardi on drums and Alex Noice on electric guitar. Expect highly dynamic music with grooves, ambient noises, and mesmerizing visual landscapes.

About the Event

At 8:16 a.m. on August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan. A second atomic bomb was released over Nagasaki, Japan three days later. On this night as we contemplate the destructive energy that humans have unleashed against their fellow man in the past (and continue to unleash in the present), we also take a positive stand together for love. We stand together against hate. As friends grateful to be assembled together in a peaceful place, we direct our energy toward reducing suffering, and promoting healing.

About the Artist

Chiho Harazaki grew up in Japan, and later moved to Los Angeles. Spending time with people from many different cultures and backgrounds helped her to discover her purpose in life as an artist. Harazaki uses adhesive tape for her art, often using common black plastic electrical tape. Tiny pieces of tape, cut by precision knife and scissors, create each detail used to compose a whole picture. Her large 7 ft x 7 ft piece Hiroshima Black Rain will be shown publicly for the first time at this event for one night only, along with several other pieces and a short film.

About the Musicians

Motoko Honda is a concert pianist, composer, and interdisciplinary artist who has created a distinctive sound through her holistic approach to music. Employing a "virtuoso technique paired with her intensely imaginative mind" (Susan Dirende, L.A. Splash Magazine), Motoko is a musical force of nature whose performances transport audiences on sonic adventures that transcend the boundaries and conventions of contemporary music.

Vinny Golia is a renowned multi-woodwind performer and award-winning composer whose recordings have been consistently picked by critics and readers of music journals for their yearly “ten best” lists. In 2009 Golia was appointed the first holder of the Michel Colombier Performer Composer Chair at Cal Arts, where he currently teaches. In 2006 the Jazz Journalists Association honored Golia with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Satnam Ramgotra is a drummer, percussionist, and composer who can be heard on countless movie scores including Dunkirk, Inception, The Last Knights, Black Hawk Down, Rush, and The Lion King (2019). Satnam applies his highly sought-after musical sense and masterful playing to a variety of instruments and musical traditions ranging from drum kit and tabla to frame drums and “found-perc” instruments. In addition to his film score work, Ramgotra has performed with artists including Beck, Seal, and Sting, and currently tours with Hans Zimmer Live.

Matt Piper is a multi-instrumentalist, music producer, and educator. In addition to playing a variety of stringed instruments (often making innovative use of electronic effects), Piper also produces experimental electronic music and teaches electronic music synthesis at the Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena, California. Piper will be playing double bass and banjo for this event.

Grex // http://www.grexsounds.com / http://grex.bandcamp.com
Grex is an art rock band based out of Oakland, California. Grex has been called "essential current-and-future listening" (Tiny Mix Tapes), exploring the meeting point between psychedelic pop/rock and the dark outer reaches of noise and free jazz. The band recalls the explosive power of late John Coltrane, the dark energy of Suicide, and the whimsical weirdness of Skeleton Crew and Deerhoof. In biological terms, “grex” refers to the aggregation of a multitude of tiny, amoeba-like creatures combining to create a superorganism. Grex (the band) works the same way: two musicians who can function as one, the whole greater than the sum of its parts.
